Hello and welcome to LeadershipConferenceMalta.org.
As you might be guessing, this is a website about Malta. While it was once only a site for a one-off conference, I thought it would be nice to make it a broader site that offers some advice and guidance about Malta.
The Republic of Malta
Malta is a chain of three small islands in the Mediterranean at the very south of Europe, just above North Africa. The three islands, in order of size and importance are Malta, Gozo and Comino.
These three islands are home to some truly amazing history. For example, on Gozo there is one of the oldest free-standing man made structures in the world. On Malta, there are two neolithic temples that are both bigger and considerably older than Stonehenge in England! There is a great deal of European military and religious history on the island and some truly spectacular Catholic churches to visit. The capital city, Valletta, is a UNESCO World Heritage site (there are nine in the country in total) and contains St John’s Co-Cathedral which is a truly stunning creation.
Politics
Malta is a member of the European Union, joining in 2004, and uses the euro as it’s currency. The highest elected Maltese politician at EU level is the EESC’s Anna Maria Darmanin. The country has two main political parties – the Nationalist Party and the Labour Party. Elections are typically very close run affairs with the winning party gaining a majority of just a few hundred votes overall.
The Economy
The Maltese economy is relatively small and isolated by definition. However, there are some very strong sectors including real estate, tourism, fishing, iGaming and language studies.
Possibly the most high profile of these sectors on the island is that of real estate. In a place as small and highly populated as Malta is, land is a very valuable commodity. There are some areas where property is hundreds of years old – almost all of Valletta for example. And then at the other end of the spectrum there are developments that are still under construction – the Malta seafront property that overlooks Valletta at Tigne Point for example. Some of the other prime newer locations include the Portomaso Marina, Pendergardens and Fort Cambridge.
There are, of course, a wide array of companies that operate in both the residential and commercial real estate sectors. One of the firms dealing in all types of property for sale in Malta is the long-established Cassar and Cooper. With offices in Valletta and St Julians and wide range of experience they are a great place to start a search for residential real estate. Another such firm, Frank Salt, with a wide range of properties in Malta, has a subsidiary called “Homes of Quality” that deals exclusively in the upper parts of the market, if that is where you are looking.
Considering that Malta is one of the most densely populated countries on earth, there is considerable demand for residential real estate and this helps to maintain prices and has lead to some significant annual price increases in the past.
As with many other countries, Malta has it’s fair share of professional bodies. One of these, and the reason this website was first created, is the Malta Institute of Management. Such bodies help to ensure that there are highly skilled and qualified professionals on the island running things.
